Bob Haro's Master BMX Bike (1980s)

Bob Haro's Master was a cutting-edge freestyle bike that revolutionized BMX. It was one among the most influential models of the 1980s. The Master frame was built around progressive geometry, and featured a bold graphic scheme. This frame was made for the future. Whether riding flatland or freestyle, the master set the standard for cutting-edge design.

Haro Bikes was the most popular brand of freestyle bikes in BMX during the 1980s. They won nearly every title in the sport. This made them one of the most beloved bikes of all time. Their first advert was published in FREESTYLIN' Magazine in 1985. But, it was only later that the company developed a line of freestyle bicycles that would revolutionize the freestyle scene.

Haro Freestyler and Master are the first two freestyle models. Both models share a similar head tube angle and seat mast. They also share the same swaged rear triangle. There are some key differences between them.

The fork legs have a different shape. In the first generation, a fork stander was placed higher on each fork leg. This allowed forks to fold up easily and kept the bike upright.

Later versions of the "Master" were redesigned. For example, the gussets at the front of the bike were machined to eliminate cracking issues. These frames were also fitted with more refined chainstays. The non-drive side dropouts on the frames were also offset rather than brazed-on.

Torker BMX, Fullerton produced the second generation USA Haro Master. It resembled the original 1983 model in its design. There were a number of new features such as swept dropouts, tapered seats stays, and double s bend chain stays that fed into a platform at the rear dropout.

A significant addition was the introduction a fully welded front end gusset. This increased the Master's risk of cracking and also provided a slight weight advantage.

The 1986 models had the most advanced specifications of any era. Many of these bikes were based upon the 1986 model. However, the specs were adjusted to reflect the price of the 1986 frame. Master didn't have a stacked mast for the seats, as the FST and Sport did.

There were three color options for the Haro Master. Neon Green was the team's issue. Gray and blue were also available. Haro Master came in two sizes, just like Sport and FST.

The 86 "Master" was a very collectible bike. The bikes were awarded to all three team riders: Ron Wilkerson (Dave Nourie), Brian Blyther (Brian Blyther), and Ron Wilkerson (Ron Wilkerson). Some models were only equipped with the back triangle. Other models had serial numbers beginning in 1985.

When it came time to reissue both frames, Haro decided to make them using the era-correct manufacturing processes. This time they used locally sourced materials.
