Mountain Bike Project - Why the East Coast is Better

The process of developing a mountainbike project can be complex. The project requires planning, approvals, and evaluations. It could also negatively impact the tourism sector. This project will make mountain biking more mainstream. Before you begin, it is important that you check the permit requirements.

After community members suggested the idea of a mountain bike park, Warburton MTB was born. The project was supported by a Healthy Parks, Healthy People grant from Parks Victoria, and was subject to a feasibility study from the City of Warburton.

To create the trail, Rhett and Walters memorial trail committees worked together with Parks and Recreation Department. The committee's goal is to find a location that allows maximum use and minimizes impact on surrounding environments. The Parks and Recreation Department started to work with this committee in February 1997.

The Rhett Walters Memorial Mountain Bike Trail was dedicated on October 30, 1999. The trail was intended to avoid the Bear Creek drainage. This was done to reduce environmental impacts and ensure that the trail can be used by all types of mountain bikes.


The trail is surrounded with state forest, Yarra Ranges National Park (and Warburton). The trails are spread over multiple areas, and will require approvals from the local government to ensure safety.

The Warburton MTB project has been in development for over two years. Over twenty-two people supported the project at the public hearing that was held on December 8. The public hearing was a success and the Parks and Recreation Commission approved a concept for developing the project. Following the approval of the concept, the Commission held another public hearing to decide whether it would endorse or deny funding.

The Commission didn't recommend that the project be approved. The Memorial Committee requested a planning committee to prepare a revised plan, which would then be presented by the Commission. The plan would also include an assessment of the effect on the local economy, and the tourism market. The committee will also be able to evaluate and recommend potential trail sites.

The International Mountain Bike Association maintains the MTB Project database, which contains information about mountain biking trails.
